MORS 430: Leadership in Organizations Professor A. Waytz Guidelines for Leadership Development Exercises Each of these Leadership Development Exercises focuses on one or two particular levers that a leader can use to achieve success. Two of these will be completed individually, and two will be completed as a Study Group. These exercises will challenge you to use the concepts presented in the course to analyze the Flat Panel Display case. An added benefit of these assignments is that they will help you to prepare for the final exam (which is also case-based). The Leadership Development Exercises will also help you to prepare for cases in other classes this fall and for case-based interviews this winter. Each of the questions should be answered in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spacing, and 1 inch margins. Answers for each individual exercise should not exceed 1 page; answers for the group exercises should not exceed 2 pages (groups turn in one answer per team, per assignment). Better answers make an observation, analyze it with class material, and provide evidence to support a conclusion. Thus, it is important to show an understanding of the lectures, class discussions, and readings in your answers. For your response, well-organized and economical answers that stress the key points rather than providing a disarranged roster of facts will be evaluated more highly. In addition, answers that venture beyond description (i.e., a narrative of what happened) to analysis (i.e., why it happened) using the information in the case and the analytical tools from class will be evaluated most highly. The Leadership Development Exercises will be evaluated and rated as a V- (=1, the lowest), V (=2), or v+ (=3). In very rare cases, a point may be added to a v+ for an exceptional answer. These exercises are designed to provide you with a low cost opportunity to develop your analytic skills. Tips for Completing the Exercises Refer to and use conceptual tools explicitly. This will help convey your understanding of the material and will economize on time and space. Make a point and provide reasons/evidence to support it. Try to go beyond description (a narration of what happened) to analysis (an explanation of why it happened) using the information in the case and analytic tools from the class. Demonstrate your ability to apply the lectures, readings, and class discussions in accurate, selective, and creative ways to diagnose, analyze, and remedy organizational problems. Accurate means using the conceptual tools in a correct and consistent manner. Selective means using the conceptual tools that give you the most leverage, rather than dumping all possible ideas. Creative means extending or applying the material in new ways . It is an Honor Code violation to circulate this document or your responses with anyone in any verbal, written, or electronic format
