Mountain Nectar Brewing Company bottles their honey wheat beer using a filling machine that can process 20 bottles per minute. They typically operate only during first shift which is 8 hours. It takes 45 minutes at the end of the day to clean the filling machine and prepare it for use the following day (which is part of first shift).

Before they are filled, the bottles go through a cleaning process that washes the bottles and fills the bottles with an inert gas so that they do not foam when being processed (filled) by the filling machine. There are two (2) of these cleaning stations and each can process 15 bottles per minute. The maintenance on the machines is rather high in that they both need to be shut down every three (3) hours for an hour of cleaning, lubing, replacing gas cylinders, etc. These machines are also only available during first shift.

1. The number of bottles that can pass through the filling process per day is:

1800 bottles

1200 bottles

9000 bottles

9300 bottles

9600 bottles

2. The number of bottles that can pass through the cleaning process per day is:

1800 bottles

14,400 bottles

5400 bottles

10,800 bottles

9600 bottles

3. The cleaning process has enough capacity to keep up with the filling process:

True

False

4. Suppose a duplicate filling process is added to the facility. The number of bottles that each machine would need to be able to clean per minute with the current cleaning process in order to keep up with the new filling process capabilities would be:

exactly 25 bottles

approximately 35 bottles

exactly 75 bottles

exactly 20 bottles

approximately 26 bottles
