Mr. Garza received a report from the school counselor regarding a student whom he had referred for an assessment of self-esteem. The student, Jorge, completed a norm-referenced questionnaire that assessed his feelings of self-confidence about school, his peers, and his family. In this case, self-confidence is something that is valued or consistent with better behavior and higher achievement. In other words, the more confidence a student reports, the better he or she may be able to function in school with peers, and with family members at home. Jorge's responses resulted in his being ranked at the 5th percentile in self-confidence with peers. This means that about 95% of students his age who were in the norming group for this assessment instrument reported feeling more confident about their peer relationships.
