Mr. Grant was a criminal lawyer who lived in Grande Prairie, Alberta and he also volunteered as a public school board trustee. Mr. Donald was a very religious man who was the elected member of the provincial Parliament for Alberta representing the City of Grande Prairie which had a population of 40,000 people and was known for its farming industry and has an abundance ofchurches. Mr Grant had three children who went to high school.
Mr. Grant has recently been hired to represent a person charged with possession of drugs that were very popular with high school kids. Mr. Grant's client was charged with possession of these illegal drugs for the purposes of trafficking. Mr. Grant was known for is very liberal views and Mr. Donald was known for his very conservative views.Coming up in the next few months were the new elections for school trustees and Mr. Grant is running again for reelection as a volunteer school trustee.
At the recent trial where Mr. Grant acted as the defense lawyer for the accused, he made some very valid arguments and raised a "Reasonable Doubt" which lead to the judge acquitting the client of Mr. Grant. Mr. Donald decided to write a letter to the editor of the Grande Prairie daily newspaper and had his letter published in this daily newspaper. In this letter, Donald maintained how important it is to be able to live in this community and possess high morals. In the letter he questioned Mr. Grant's integrity and referred to some arguments that Mr. Grant made during the trial. Mr. Donald in his letter gave the opinion in writing that - since Mr. Grant had made these arguments successfully to acquit his client from the possession of illegal drugs - Mr. Grant himself must think that it's okay for any person to possess illegal drugs.Mr. Donald also then went on to give his support to several people running for school trustee and did not give his support for Mr. Grant. Mr. Grant lost the election for school trustee (a job that was voluntary) and he also found that his client base started to decrease. His kids became stressed at school as well.
Mr. Grant sues Mr. Donald for damages of $750,000 and all court costs.
