Multimedia can be a valuable element in a learning environment. As an instructional designer or technologist, you will often have to propose learning solutions that include multimedia. Multimedia elements should promote learning, however, and not be included just because you can.

You are working with a department manager who has requested development of an educational and informational program. You think creating an interactive, multimedia-infused environment would be an excellent solution. How will you present your proposal in a persuasive manner?

Use your favorite search engine to locate information about virtual and other multimedia tools and environments to help you with the response. In addition, you may find the resources in this unit's Reading to be valuable.

To continue the conversation, assume that you have convinced your department chair or manager that including multimedia in your course or learning product will be a good idea. To get started on implementation, describe a specific learning problem or scenario you think requires multimedia to promote learning. Then propose an appropriate learning solution. Consider how well the media would integrate with the learning environment, the cost, the learning contexts in which the learners will use the media, and other relevant considerations.

• What technology tool(s) will you use to develop the multimedia?
• What will the cost be to develop this multimedia?
• How long will the multimedia take to develop?
• Where will it be housed once it is completed?
• How will it be provided to the end-user?
