multiple choice question:
1.
Which of the following statements about study is correct?
A. The theoretical construct you are trying to predict is pirate attrition; the measure for that construct is your survey.
B. Based on the experimental design described here, it is only possible to assess internal consistency reliability (not test-retest or inter-rater reliability) for the survey.
C. If age and nationality predict captainRating but pirateScore doesn't, that would mean that pirateScore is an unreliable measure.
D. There is no operationalisation for the measure captainRating because it is subjective.
You are a nineteenth-century pirate on the pirate ship Indomitable. Your captain is a big fan of the experimental method. Because of high attrition among new recruits to his crew, he is very interested in determining what factors lead people to succeed (in his estimation) in his crew as a pirate. Your job is to develop a measure that best predicts that success. Being a pirate, the captain is very fearsome so you want to make sure to get this right!
After much work, you design survey that you give to each member of the existing crew. When additional crew members join, you have them fill out the survey before they start as well. It consists of ten items presented in random order on which each person has to rate themselves. You test each person beforehand to be sure they can read and understand the survey. The complete survey is here:
Each of the questions below asks you to rate yourself on a scale from 1 to 5. Choose 1 if you strongly disagree that the statement applies to you, 5 if you strongly agree, and 3 if you are neutral. Answer honestly.
I am very strong. 1 2 3 4 5
I love to sing a good sea shanty. 1 2 3 4 5
I care for nothing more than treasure. I inspire terror in innocent hearts. 1 2 3 4 5
I lift weights routinely. 1 2 3 4 5
I have been a sailor since childhood. 1 2 3 4 5
I love gold beyond all else. 1 2 3 4 5
I arrive and people tremble in fear. 1 2 3 4 5
I am known for my singing ability.
Ihave lived .1 2 3 4 5
This survey yields a composite "pirate score" of between 10 and 50, calculated by summing up all of the answers (thus, a score of 10 corresponds to answering 1 for every question). After a year of data collection, you have the captain rate each crew member who is currently still on the Indomitable on a scale of 1 to 5 in terms of how awesome they are (where 1 = awful and 5 = awesome, integers only). This yields the dataset Quiz1.RData (found on MyUni) with the following variables:
pirateScore: each person's composite score on your survey (integers from 10 to 50)
captainRating: the rating given by the captain for that person (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5)
age: the person's age when they filled out the survey (in years)
nationality: the person's country of birth
