Muriel Borken is the chief investigator for the corporate security department. Ralph Mouton, assistant to the head of accounting, tells Muriel in confidence he believes his boss is funneling money into an account for a vendor that does not exist. As a result, the department's budget would be depleted if the boss had not laid off one employee and cut back on the purchase of office supplies and maintenance costs for the department's word processing and copying equipment. Muriel asks Mouton to provide her with copies of documents that would substantiate the allegation. Mouton refuses, stating he'd be found out and summarily fired. He also said his boss would most likely destroy incriminating documents if he fell under suspicion. Muriel learns that Mouton and his boss have had a long-running feud over "philosophical differences," and she tends to doubt Mouton's allegation. Muriel conducts a background check on the head of accounting and on Mouton. The background report comes back with nothing negative concerning Mouton's boss but the report on Mouton showed he had been arrested twice for domestic violence. Two days later, Mouton was fired and one week later, Mouton's boss resigned. Muriel interviewed the accounting department's senior secretary. She said Mouton was fired on trumped up charges and before the boss resigned he had shredded a great number of documents. Muriel attempted to contact the resigned head of accounting but learned he had moved to another state, address unknown. Muriel continues the investigation.
