Muriel is part of a new stepfamily with her mother, Jeannette, stepfather, Walt, and stepbrother, Henry. In their family, no one seems to know what to call one another, and there is confusion about how discipline will be handled and about where to go for holidays. Jeannette's and Walt's extended families also seem unsure about how to treat Muriel and Walt as steprelatives. When Jeannette and Walt later separate, Muriel is confused about what sort of relationship, if any, she should now have with Walt and Henry. Muriel and her family members lack or have a complete cultural script, which inhibits or reinforces the development of their stepfamily identity.
