After you have done an in-depth exploration of the Mason Library Subject Guide for your academic discipline, please answer the following questions: Note your discipline. Example--Humanities. Note your major or specific field fo study. Example--Composition studies Identify at least three key resources from your discipline's subject guide that stood out to you and explain why you feel they are important. By resources, I mean specific things (websites, databases, etc.) in the subject guide that you can use to learn more about your discipline or to learn more about the various subjects and topics covered by your subject area. Why specifically did these resources stand out to you based on your interest and based on what you know about your discipline. Run some searches on a topic of interest to you using a database or other key resouce you noted above. Then, identify key terms that stood out among the resources in your subject guide. Look specifically for terms and phrases used to describe topics of interest in your field of study; examples of such terms from compositon studies would be linguistic justice, rhetorical awareness, etc. Why did these terms stand out to you? Note how terms regarding your field of study are used in non-academic sources of information, such as newspapers, magazines, professional blogs, etc. How are they similar or different from how they are used in academic sources? Does your subject guide list one or more professional and/or academic organizations in your field? If so, list it here. Identify at least two topics that the organization addresses. How are these topics related to the key terms you compiled? (Professional and academic organizations often include advocacy work done on behalf of the field.Keep this in mind for later use in the Advocacy Letter Project--you can also look for professionals associations by going to Associations Unlimited, avaiable through the GMU library.
