My rating of cultural consciousness would be approximately a 6. I am a female who is a visible minority and grew up in a low-income home with parents who were immigrants to Canada. Growing up I was consciously aware of my "differences" which contributes to my complexity and intersectionality of cultural identities and relationalities. As I walk down my neighborhood, I present as a young female who is a visible minority of medium socioeconomic status based on my general presentation (Collins, 2018). I need to be aware of the multifaceted nature of being a female of visible minority may present in counselling. Spalding et al., (2019) completed a study in the UK documenting the experience of ethic counsellors working with white clients. The counsellors reported when they approached the sessions as "coloured blind", and ignored cultural differences they felt this negatively impacted the therapeutic relationship. Whereas counsellors who were confident in reflecting on cultural identity and exploring this in counselling had more success in their therapeutic relationships. Therefore, when working with clients like Jane I would explore how her eastern European heritage influenced her self-perception and what her experience was as a second generation Canadian? As well as how this shaped her cultural, gender and social class identity (Collins, 2018). What cultural factors would you explore with Jane? please provide with in-text citation
