My thoughts on the idea of positively rewarding employees for exhibiting safe behavior and whether or not it would be beneficial or potentially harmful is simple. It is beneficial. Although I'm just now finishing up my degree, I have been in safety now for over 10 years and held positions in the military, manufacturing companies, distribution companies, and now I am a consultant for organization. Over time, I have witnessed what happens to safety culture driven by discipline instead of influence. In safety, we should want people to do the right thing because it's the right thing to do. That means they must truly buy-in to the processes that we are selling and feel valued for their buy-in. I see too often how the bad is remembered for years but the good is quickly forgotten. When employees feel as though it's also a situation of "dang if I do, and dang if I don't" what is the point of trying. If we can recognize the unsafe behaviors, there must be a balance to recognize the safe behaviors. Peer to peer influence is greater than any policy or procedure when addressing the safety culture or climate
