SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT CASE 1 Raw Nature Logistics (Pty) Ltd (Trading as RNL) RNL is a fast-growing business situated in the Freestate, specialising in logistic services mainly focussing on the movement of grain between private farms and various silos. Their main target market is the smaller grain farmers who are too far away from the silos to use a tractor and trailer to get the grain to the closest silo. Due to its success and therefore high profit margins, the board of directors decided that they will search for opportunities to expand the business. The Marketing Director who was one of the founders of RNL saw an advertisement in the Sunday press that immediately caught his interest. It was a call for tenders, which had to be submitted within 14 days, for the movement of ore between a chrome mine and the mine's own foundry, situated in Mpumalanga. Within three weeks after submitting the tender, RNL received the good news that they were accepted as the new partner of Chromore Industries. Operations at Chromore were to start within 4 weeks after receiving the notice of acceptance. RNL acquired 50 new trucks and had to recruit 50 new truck drivers from the towns that are surrounding the mine, as that was one of the tender conditions. In order to be able to recruit enough drivers from the local towns, RNL had to recruit drivers who had to obtain driver's licences for heavier vehicles than what they were used to be driving. RNL also couldn't find a suitably qualified Operations Manager in time and therefore seconded one of the Freestate fleet successful in running the new branch, he could be promoted to Operations Manager of the new managers to manage the start-up of the Mpumalanga branch. They indicated that if he was branch. They would appraise his performance after six months of operations. Gen Man Assignment based SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT Page 2 of 5
