image text in transcribed Written Activities 11.1-11.10 ELEMENT 1 Activity 11.1 Select a part of an educational program/curriculum which you have access to and reflect either by yourself or with peers about how it connects with Framework Principles, Practices and Learning Outcomes. What modifications would you make to support all aspects of children's learning and promote opportunities for sustained shared thinking and collaborative learning as in the example in Table 11.1 See McGraw-Hill education early childhood educator diploma Chapter 11 Activity 11.2 Evaluate and consider modifications of the learning environment and materials in the educational program/curriculum which you have access to (or an example one you have developed yourself). Is there sufficient evidence of the promotion of the natural environment? ELEMENT 2 Activity 11.3 Research the local community and record what you find out about the types of families; their socioeconomic status; the range of cultures and their diverse lifestyles; the local schools; leisure facilities; community support agencies; employment possibilities; and environmental issues. How will this information influence the service's curriculum? How will you collate this information and present it as a short report? Activity 11.4 Develop your own personal philosophy that reflects the guiding principles of the National Quality Standard and other documents and your beliefs, values, commitment and future goals for the educational program you want to provide. ELEMENT 3 Activity 11.5 Revisit the three play-based learning opportunities and experiences you planned for Sameer in Chapter 10. How were they based on Sameer's interests, strengths and family background? What were the Early Years Learning Framework goals you were hoping to achieve by providing these types of learning opportunities? Activity 11.6 Access more than one service's programming format or find these through research on the internet or at the library. Evaluate them and design a format you feel will meet the criteria outlined above. Does your format show links to the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Standard? Are there spaces for family comments? Does it indicate whether the experiences will be outdoors or indoors? Does it identify the planned experiences, interactions, the organisation of time and space, routines and transitions? Will it focus on observing certain children on certain occasions without missing opportunities to observe other children? Is there a space for listing required resources? If not, where will this list be? ELEMENT 4 Activity 11.7 Develop a daily indoor and an outdoor floor plan for an infant's, a toddler's and a preschool room (actual or imaginary). Include fixed items such as doors, cupboards and windows and then decide the best location for each of your selected learning areas. Give reasons why you have placed the areas in certain positions. Have you allowed for all aspects of learningfor example, physical (large and small muscle), personal, social, creative, linguistic, cognitive, emotional and spiritual wellbeing learning possibilities? How have you marked these as focuses in your format? Now, devise an additional format to show the resources you will make available to the children and where you will place them. Where will staff need to be positioned to ensure adequate supervision? How will you record this on your formats? Activity 11.8 Imagine you're an educator in an education and care service (your choice of long day care, preschool/kindergarten, family day care or occasional care). You observe two young children who have been collecting fallen leaves in a basket. One of the children discovers a beetle among the leaves and points at it. The other child moves closer to look. Write a script for how you will join in the children's investigations to learn what you can about the children's understanding so that you can plan some extension activities. Try to include some of Iain's strategies from the At Work example above. ELEMENT 5 Activity 11.9 Record some ideas for how you will involve families in supporting the assessment of children's learning and development? How will you demonstrate that you value their input? How will you share the assessment of a child's learning with a family? Activity 11.10 Revisit the reflect and review process discussed at the beginning of this chapter and assess how you would use it again this second time through the learning cycle. Review Questions The end of chapter review questions reflect the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work (6 weeks continuous program planning) in at least one regulated education and care service whether a volunteer or a full time employed educator. 1. How will you evaluate and modify the environment and materials to enhance opportunities for children's learning? 2. How will you design a curriculum that reflects a service's philosophy? 3. What strategies will you use to gather information to use as a basis for addressing a child's identified needs? 4. How will you design learning experiences to foster children's development? 5. How will you assess and evaluate the curriculum and learning experiences in accordance with a service's guidelines? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzR2eiMy8749RHVrXzVQTHQtaVU/view?usp=sharing
