We wanted to examine if people in relationships can differ in their perceptions of how supportive their partner is based on a brief training to recognize supportiveness from their partner. To test this, we invited couples to participate in our study and we recruited a total of 418 consenting participants. In each couple, one person learned about how to notice their partners non-verbal supportive behaviour and the other person learned about how to notice their partners verbal supportive communication. After the training, the couples were asked to complete a few activities together that we gave them over the course of an hour. At the end of the hour, we asked each participant to indicate how much support they felt they received from their partner during the activities they did together. We conducted an independent measures t-test and found that partners that learned how to recognize non-verbal supportiveness recognized significantly greater amounts of support from their partners than those who learned how to recognize verbal supportiveness, t(417) = 2.01, p < .05, d = .03, 95% CI [.04, 20.41].
