When Carol called to make her appointment, she stated that she had a "little problem" and needed some help. Following a brief intake history, Carol revealed that she had just gotten her second DUI and has been court-ordered to participate in counseling. She explained that both times she was "barely buzzed" and the police "just wanted to make an example of (her)." Carol did also admit that sometimes she likes to have a "drink or two" but denied that she has a drinking problem. After more discussion, Carol revealed that she has not been sleeping well and rarely leaves the house unless she is going to a bar. Carol has not had a romantic relationship in her life that has lasted more than a month. Carol rationalized her personal life with "Who needs men anyway?" and changed the subject. She also shared that she hates her job and misses her children (neither are living at home at this time).

In the course of conversation, Carol launched into a tangent about dreams she had in her youth and how she had really wanted to be a writer. She shared that she'd been in an honors literature program in college; she'd had to drop out at age 19 when she became pregnant. She also shared that she'd struggled her entire life to better herself and make a life for her kids, but now wonders where it got her. She wistfully asked, "Is this all there is?" during the session; she wondered aloud if she will spend the next 45 years in the same existence.
