Name: Gr 8 Date: /14 Does Air Actually Have Pressure #1? Background: We have learned in our text book that gasses such as air have pressure, and air pressure acts on us constantly despite our inability to feel it. We will perform two experiments to prove conclusively that gasses do indeed exert pressure, and that air pressure exists. Procedure: Experiment 1 - Gas Pressure 1) Using the experimental rig Mr. Wilson setup, watch the syringe in the rig. Record what happens below. Experiment 2 - Air Pressure 1) Get two beakers. Fill one about 3/4 full with water, leave the other empty. 2) Elevate the beaker with water at least 30 cm above the empty one. 3) Place the hose in the full beaker and connect the syringe at the other end. Draw air out of the hose using the syringe until you draw water into the syringe. 4) Quickly disconnect the syringe and place the end of the hose into the empty beaker. Record what happens. Observations: (4 marks) Experiment 1 Syringe ObservationsExperiment 2 Questions: 1. What was responsible for moving the syringe in experiment 1? Use the particle theory of matter in your answer. (4 marks) 2. Why did the water flow from the beaker above to the beaker below? Be sure to include gravity and higher and lower pressure in your answer. (3 marks) 3. Is the force that air pressure exerts strong or weak? Explain your answer. (3 marks)
