Holt Physics. 10801 N. MoPac Expressway, Building 3, Austin, Texas 78759: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, pp.558-572. ELECTRIC FLUX Electric flux is the rate of flow of the electric field through a given area. Electric flux is proportional to the number of electric filed lines going through a virtual surface. If the electric field is uniform, the electric flux passing through a surface of vector area A is given by QE = E.A = EA cos 0 where E is the magnitude of electric field (V/m), A is the area of the surface, and 0 is the angle between electric field lines and the normal (perpendicular) to A. For a non-uniform electric field, the electric flux through a small surface area dA is given by dDE = E.dA, the electric field, E, is multiplied by the component of area perpendicular to the field. Sample Problem: Figure Electric flux A uniform electric field E=8000 N/C passing visualized. The ring Flux is proportional through a flat square area A=10m2. Determine the shows the surface electric flux. boundaries. The arrows are for the Solution: electric field lines. Flux varies by how the boundary faces the direction of flow Given: PE= EA cos 0 E= 8000 N/C = (8000 N/C)(10m2)(cos09) A= 10m2 = (8000) (10)(1) 0= 0 =80,000 Nm2/C or 8x104 Nm2/C Flux is proportional to the area within the boun ACTIVITY Solve the following problems. Use the rubrics as your guide in presenting your solution. Fully meeting expectations Minimally meeting expectations Not meeting expectations Correct and complete solution Incomplete solution with Wrong solution Solution with no mathematical errors minimal mathematical errors (1 point) (3 points) and (2 points) Final answer is correct and labels Makes a small computation Answer is incorrect, or Final Answer it correctly error or did not label it correctly student does not have (2 points (1 point) a final answer (0) 1-5. A uniform electric field with a magnitude of E = 400 N/C incident on a plane surface of area A = 10 m and makes an angle of 0 = 30 with it. Find the electric flux through the surface. 6-10. A square surface with sides of 1 m x 1 m located over the xy-plane, where a constant electric field with a magnitude of 200 N.m?/C presents.
