National security issues can be difficult to grasp because of their size and scope. However, at its heart, any ethical issue related to national security can be compared to a similar small-scale action. For this activity, you will choose any ethical issue involving national security and a short (five-minute) "lesson for kids," aimed at pre-teens, that illustrates the ethical issue by using real-world examples.

Your assignment will consist of both a written lesson plan as well as actively teaching that lesson to your course supervisor.

The written lesson plan should consist of the following:

1. An opening statement about the ethical issue you are going to cover and why it is important to national security
2. A short "real-world" example of that same ethical issue that translates the concepts into something on a smaller-scale; for example, reading your little sister's diary, stealing something from your neighbor's house, or using physical violence and intimidation against a classmate in order to get your way
3. A closing statement linking the real-world example to the larger ethical issue

The presentation of the lesson plan will involve you "teaching" your course supervisor as if he or she were a pre-teen. You should open with a general explanation of what "national security" and "ethics" are, using easy-to-understand language, then explain the specific ethical problem you've chosen by using the small-scale, real-world example. You may use notecards, a PowerPoint presentation, or other materials but avoid reading directly from your lesson plan.
