Online Advertising for this Generation
According to a massive new study from Kantar Millward Brown, Gen Zers are more
discriminating and more aversive than most when it comes to advertising in general. For online
marketing Gen Zers are significantly more likely to skip ads which has been theorized to correlate to a lower boredom threshold. Similarly, they also more likely to be turned off by
invasive and interruptive online and mobile marketing formats. It is believed that Gen Zers are
actually more positive than other groups when it comes to traditional media. (Sterling, 2017)
Role of Traditional Methods of Marketing with Generation Z
Every article I came across regarding Generation Z stated, in some form or fashion,
that "traditional marketing does not work for generation z" and "throw out traditional
marketing for generation z", or "forget all you knew about traditional marketing with
generation z" and on and on ad nauseum. Despite this I did find a RevLocal article (Anderson,
2021) which stated (in two separate areas) that video format marketing is effective with
Generation Z and that this generation find storytelling in marketing to be appealing. This
could be used for short story format TV commercial (if YouTube commercials are out of the
questions for this assignment) or perhaps traditional televisions sitcoms with product
placement.
