Everything that a global corporate company does is in the interest of their bottom line. In this case, Volkswagen engineers seemed to of acted on their own accord. In the textbook (Hill, 2021), states that the engineers were disciplined, and the top-level managers had no knowledge of the software. Despite the software being able to get by U.S. regulations in testing, it was a public health concern because of the amount of emissions into the environment. Volkswagen aimed to become the "the world's most environmentally compatible automaker" before getting caught in the scandal in 2015 (Fitzgerald & Spencer, 2020, p. 51). I believe the reasons why the engineers tampered with the emissions systems is because they knew that they had achieved what the consumer wanted, which is cheaper fuel consumption without sacrificing power. However, at what cost to environment is that ok? The entire scandal is interesting because it shows that the corporate culture of all the employees at Volkswagen may not have been on the same page. Volkswagen's marketing was motivating buyers to purchase based on their "going green" strategy, meanwhile the engineers are finding unethical loopholes to not show the true emissions of the automobiles (Fitzgerald & Spencer, 2020, p. 53). Meanwhile, the upper management is completely unaware of any of this at all. The upper management found out about this in October 2015 after a VW engineer broke his silence since the news already came out globally in September 2015 (Fitzgerald & Spencer, 2020). I believe that the situation could have been avoided if managements requests to drop emissions by 30% was approached with more of an open mind on how the engineers would achieve this near impossible task. The situation tells you that openness and communication was major problem at Volkswagen that contributed to "Emissiongate". The Volkswagen recall brought to light the harsh reality and dangers of making automobiles. Asya result, many consumers opted to stay away from German automakers in general, which is the effect of one company not following the rules set in place for the good of humanity (Dimitrije, 2019). The unethical issue is that this issue says that the automobile industry will sacrifice health and safety to earn a marketing bullet that will make them more money, whether the marketing in this case of "green energy" is true or not. Volkswagen paid almost $15 billion in fines to the U.S. in a civil settlement (Dimitrije, 2019). The entire scandal suggest that the industry cannot be trusted and in this case "German engineered" was discredited as a result of one companies lack of compliance to the ethical rules and standards set in place
