Introduction

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an overly sensitive topic and can be incredibly stressful to the diagnosed children, teachers, parents, and other family members. Some students have prescribed Psychostimulant Medication, however, unfortunately by mid-afternoon the depressant is out of their system, and they longer have total control of their actions. Based on observation some students who are affected by ADHD are branded negatively, and often get into trouble. School districts along with state laws do their best to protect ADHD students, however this does not prevent these students from consequences for their actions.

My research question is, Does ADHD affect children behavior in the classroom and does students with ADHD academic performance have the same ability to adapt and learn as a student without this special condition.

I am ______________ a Psychology Graduate Student at Grand Canyon University, inviting you to participate in a research study titled: Does ADHD affect children behavior in the classroom and does students with ADHD academic performance have the same ability to adapt and learn as a student without this special condition.

Purpose

The study aimed to examine the impact of ADHD on various school functions.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common (5-10% in school-age) neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by pervasive symptoms of developmentally excessive inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children with ADHD exhibit more school difficulties, poorer social participation, and higher classroom disruption [3] than their non-ADHD peers, Liu, Huang, Kao, Gau and Gau (2017).

ADHD affects Roughly 5% of children under the age of eighteen. ADHD affects children's ability to be social and as a result these children develop emotional challenges, and are prevented from being academically successful, and have a high chance of developing psychiatric problems, Hilger, Sassenhagen, Khnhausen, Reuter, Schwarz, Gawrilow, and Fiebach, (2020).

Description of the Research Study

As a participant in this study, the program will examine the effects of ADHD on children's behavior in the classroom and seek to find out if students with ADHD academic performance have the same ability to adapt and learn as a student without this special condition.

School functions will be assessed and compared between ADHD and Non-ADHD students.

The study will involve 100 participants who will be observed three times per week for 1 hour in small groups. Both parents and teachers will be asked for their input.

An interview scale is designed for children aged 6-18 and their parents to assess the child's functioning of the school, spare time, peer relations, and home behaviors.

Risks & Benefits

This study includes a small number of patients in each study group (6-10 participants). Data will be collected by Observation, survey, and interviews. Some students may feel uncomfortable being observed.

Non-ADHD students will be screened for ADHD. The result of finding will be presented to parent if requested. Early detection and intervention for ADHD is important to prevent adverse outcomes, Prasad, Brogan, Mulvaney, Grainge, Stanton and Sayal (2013).

All procedures performed in this study involving human participants are in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional and/or national research committee and with the 1964 Helsinki and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards.

Confidentiality

All information obtained in this study is strictly confidential unless required by law. The results of this research may be used in reports, presentations, and publications, but the researchers will not identify you. To protect your privacy and identity, all records of your participation will be given a group number that does not allow anyone (including the project staff) to personally identify you. These records will be kept in a locked cabinet in a locked room where they will remain for at least 3 years following the completion of this research/study or until the records can be safely destroyed (Privitera, 2019).
