Question 1 2 pts We want to estimate the fraction of taxpayers who have cheated on their taxes. People will not truthfully answer the direct question: "Have you ever cheated on your taxes?" To get around this we instruct people taking the survey to flip a fair coin twice, and to answer Question 1 if the coin turns up "heads" twice (both times), and to answer Question 2 otherwise. (The person conducting the survey can't see whether the coin turns up "heads" twice, or not. Therefore, assume people answer truthfully.) Question 1 is "Is your blood type B+"? Question 2 is "Have you cheated on your taxes?" For both questions "yes" and "no" are the only possible answers. Assume that 10% of the population has a B+ blood type, and that outcomes of the coin tosses are independent of blood type and of whether a person cheated on their taxes. The survey is given to a very large sample of taxpayers. This sample accurately reflects the population of taxpayers. 5% of the sample answers "yes". What does this sample suggest is the fraction of taxpayers who have cheated on their taxes? Use the following notation: C denotes the event "person cheated on taxes". P(C) is what we want to calculate. B+ denotes the event "blood type is B+". We are told that P(B+) = 0.10. Q1 denotes the event "person answers Q1" Q2 denotes the event "person answers Q2" Y denotes the event "person answers yes" This is the first of 6 questions in this set. Give all probabilities as "fractions" (NOT as "percents"). Calculate P(Q1). Two decimals Question 2 2 pts Calculate P(Q2). (Don't make this two hard.) Two decimals Question 3 2 pts What is the value of P(Y)? HINT: It is given in the question. No calculation is necessary. Two decimalsQuestion 4 2 pts What is the value of P(Y|Q1)? (What fraction of people who answer Q1 says "yes"?) HINT: It is given in the question. No calculation is necessary. Two decimals Question 5 2 pts Calculate the value of P(Y|Q2). (This is the fraction of people answering Q2 who say "yes".) Three decimals Question 6 2 pts What is the value of P(C)? HINT: No additional calculation is necessary. Three decimals
