Note:It will involve you making trip to your regular grocery shopping store.
Read the entire lab including the introduction, objectives, and procedure. You are to complete
- PART 1. Exploring the marketplace: Follow instructions as given: # 1, 2, 3
- Answer questions 4-12.
- Make tables and data sheets to fill in your data.
EXERCISE 14: Field Trip to Grocery Store and Food Labeling What role does the marketplace place in the way that we eat? How do food labels convey information about food items to help consumers make sustainable food choices? Such questions are important given that most of us are not directly involved in food production, but rather engage with food through our consumption choices. In this lab, you will explore a grocery store to analyze and evaluate various elements of the marketplace and consider how they might shape the way that you eat. In addition you will evaluate food labels for the information they include, and what they omit that should be included. Here are a few questions that you will be exploring as part of this lab: What food choices are available to consumers? How do available food choices affect the environment? What is the purpose of labeling? How might labels be redesigned to better serve consumers? OBJECTIVES 1. Explore connections between what the marketplace offers and your food choices. 2. Identify links that connect marketplace choices to food production systems. 3. Analyze food labels for the information they offer consumers about the food they consumer. 4. Redesign food labels to enable consumers to make sustainable food choices. 5. Reflect on ways that food production could be made more sustainable through consumer choices. PROCEDURE PART 1. EXPLORING THE MARKETPLACE 1. Complete the Grocery Store Datasheet on an independent visit to the store you/your family typically shops at. 2. Read "The Pleasures of Eating," an essay by author, farmer, and cultural critic Wendell Berry (1990). Find the essay here: http://www.ecoliteracy.org/essays/pleasures-eating 3. Answer questions 1-3 on the Report Form. What is the total number of different fruits and vegetables available for sale? 2. For 3 fruits and vegetables, find out where and how they were grown. Choose 3 different prepared food items such as soups, snacks, frozen meals cereals, etc. Look at the labels. Record the claims made on the labels and identify them by category - Are they about health? Nutritional quality? Taste? Environmental concerns? Convenience? Any other categories? Is the packaging recyclable? Respond to this question in general or in terms of 2 specific products. 9. How are each of these food items processed? Are they frozen? Dehydrated? Canned? Pre-cooked? Irradiated? 10. Are bulk foods available? If so, list the kinds you find. Marketing 11. For one packaged item from one of the above sections and count the number of brands of that item you find available. List several of the brands and comment on what, if any similarities/ differences you observe between them. 12. In the store, what kind of marketing is directed at the shopper?
