Two listening skills I would benefit from are mindfulness and responding. Improving my listening skills would increase the effectiveness of my communication within the workplace by allowing myself to be more open minded about decisions that have to be made. We tune in fully to another person and try to understand what that person is communicating without imposing our own ideas, judgements or feelings. Mindfulness grows out of the decision to attend fully to another (Wood, 2010 p. 164). For example - There has been a lot of controversy in my workplace about a union. Majority suggests that it would be the wrong business decision to make. However, upper management has been more open minded to it than ever before. So there was a mandatory meeting regarding the facts surrounding the controversy. Even though I had heard some of the advantages and disadvantages, I decided to decide for myself based on the information that was provided to me before making my vote.

Sometimes, when someone talks to me, they aren't seeking a response but instead listening ear. Our reading suggests that non-verbal behaviors such as attentive postures, nodding our head, and eye contact (Wood, 2010 P. 167) are a response in themselves. It reassures the person that your engaged in their conversation. These listening skills and concepts apply equally to my workplace and my personal life.
