Teams

I am a member of a team composed of 6 individuals and we are working on a project for development of a new tool with the objective to use this tool to identify and resolve process inefficiencies.

The tool will use the existing database of a company and will perform predictive analysis to recommend process changes based on data analytics and related functions. The team of 6 is from a diverse background with all the team members from different cultural and ethnic group.

The team is well integrated and understands the individual preferences and priorities. The team formation was a month long process wherein we went through different stages of team formation and evolved as an integrated and objective oriented team.

These stages included:

  1. Forming: Initially when we started working as a team the roles and responsibilities were not clearly defined with overlapping roles and responsibilities. However, with greater clarity and definition of roles each individual was assigned specific tasks and roles.

For example, three team members were given the role of development.

One member performed the role of testing and validation. One member was dedicated to requirement gathering and managing delivery while one member was inducted as an intern and worked across all areas.

  1. Storming: The team when through the storming phase which was predominantly difference of opinion and working styles. This included awkward moments wherein team was not aligned on many decisions and approach of development.
  2. Norming: With realization and time the individual bias was resolved and team accepted functioning of fellow members, with more constructive and collective decision making kicking in the process.
  3. Performing: With time individuals started building personal connects and the delivery was smoothly driven. All the members were now contributing towards the common objective of quality and timely delivery of the product.

Strength and weakness

Strengths:

  1. Diversity of the team contributed to a more adaptable and dynamic environment
  2. Ability to make well informed decisions with all the members accepting and considering difference of opinion as a positive input
  3. Motivation: The team was motivated with healthy competition to deliver high quality

Weakness:

  1. The team lacked in competing with other teams and were complacent at times because of high confidence internally within the team

Steps to improve team performance:

  1. Reward and recognition of team members for their work, reinforcement of the quality of work done by appreciating team members and team
  2. Sessions on clarifying and reaffirming objectives and goals
  3. Team building activities to engage team members in activities outside of work
  4. Training of team members for acquiring of new skills and building of acquired skills
