New housing developments are being built on the edge of a town in Florida. The town needs a new water supply, and they decide to tap into the local ground water. The town engineer discovers the water is enclosed in a karst formation which causes prolonged exposure of the water to solid CaCO3, leading to dissolution of Ca2+ and CO3 2- into solution. Samples of ground water were determined to contain on average about 9x10-3 M TOTCO3. The water pH, though, varied significantly depending on location. The water needs to be treated, softened, and pH-adjusted. As a first approximation to characterizing the water, calculate the total alkalinity for this water if it has a pH of 9.8.
