APA format for citations and references Each Student post should have a reply of 120 words STUDENT 1: Whether it is by rail, road, ship, or air the use of containers to load goods into several other containers to make it easier for transport is known as containerization. Intermodalism uses containerization as a tool to eliminate the need to handle products within the container. Another example of containerization is when bulk shipping is broken down from one container to another at the rail or port. The movement of international ships via containers using such modes of transport is intermodalism. Intermodalism makes use of the most efficient cost effective methods to move goods from one place to another. The containers are what makes intermodalism important. They enable shipping industries to find the most cost effective means to ship their products. Intermodalism and Containerization both work hand and hand. Both work together to reduce laboring and packing cost. Although both work together they are still different.-TL STUDENT 2: Containerization: The container is a large metal box that became standardized in the 1960's. The two primary containers used are the TEU which is a 20 foot container and the FEU which are in the 40 foot variety. These containers have enabled shippers to use the same standard handling equipment to move these containers in ports, rail stations and on the back of trucks. By using containers, the shipper doesn't have to worry about load configurations and can accurately plan how much space will be needed to handle upcoming shipments and it removes the guesswork in equipment needed to load and unload and makes everything so much more efficient. Intermodalism: Simply put intermodal transportation is the exchange of passengers or freight from one mode of transportation to another. In the past this was held back due to regulations that prevented a company from operating multiple modes of transportation. This was a major obstacle because a ship company had no reason to make it easy on rail or trucks and vise versa. in the 1980's deregulation allowed companies to operate across different modes of transportation and this invigorated the intermodal method. When one company can take your goods from A to B without using another company they are going to do everything they can to make it easier on themselves and more efficient. This is a win for the consumer being they only have to deal with one shipper and also one bill of lading even though their goods may be using two or three different modes of transportation. Personally I think these two concepts go hand in hand.
