Most of these characteristics were covered within your video lectures for chapter 5 when the 10 characteristics of verbal and nonverbal were compared and contrasted. I would like to emphasize the importance of the many functions that nonverbal communication serves. Understanding these many functions facilitates your ability to more accurately encode and decode nonverbal communication. The ability to ethically, effectively, and appropriately express (encode) and read (decode) nonverbal cues is correlated with increased socio-emotional well being. The many functions that nonverbal communication serves demonstrate the relationship between the verbal and nonverbal message(s).
