6. A student carried out the following experiment to determine the boiling point of cooking oil. copper block - water cooking oil copper block Figure 1 Figure 2 polystyrene cup Step 1: He put a copper block into a beaker of cooking oil. Step 2: He heated up the oil and the copper block until the oil boiled. (Figure 1) Step 3: He took the copper block out of the beaker and quickly transferred it into a polystyrene cup of water at room temperature. (Figure 2) Step 4: He measured the highest temperature reached by the water. The following results are obtained: Mass of water inside the polystyrene cup = 200 g Initial temperature of water = 25 -C Highest temperature reached by water = 35 .C Specific heat capacity of water = 4200 J kg- C- Heat capacity of the copper block = 33 J .C.I Neglect the heat capacity of the polystyrene cup. (2 marks) (a) Find the energy absorbed by the water from the copper block. (b) Hence, find the boiling point of the oil. (2 marks) By considering the following cases independently, state whether the actual boiling point of the oil is higher or lower than the experimental result found in (b). (i) Some water was vaporized when the copper block was immersed into the water. (ii) The polystyrene cup actually absorbed some energy from the copper block. Some hot oil was actually adhered to the copper block and transferred to the water. (3 marks) (iii)
