Cultural Awareness: Foods That Our Ancestors Ate
- Trace your ancestry back as far as you can. That is, were your grandparents or great grandparents from Ireland, or Mexico, or have you heard that your ancestors came from Iran or Russia? There might be more than one country to consider. Just ask family members if you do not know.
After tracing my ancestry back as far as I can, I found out that my grandparents are originally from Mexico. My grandmother was born and raised in Veracruz, while my grandfather grew up in Mexico City. They both migrated to the United States in search of better opportunities for their families. According to my mother, "my grandparents were very proud of their Mexican heritage and always made sure to keep our traditions alive." I also found a reference from a family member who said, "our family has deep roots in Mexico, and we take pride in our culture and traditions."
- Explore the cultural foods that your ancestors ate. Write about these foods. Use class notes, library research and the Internet to answer this question; cite the literature when necessary.
- What were the staple foods of your ancestors? What would be a typical meal? Answer in 1-2 paragraphs.
- How do you eat today compared to your ancestors? Is there any influence at all of the foods your ancestors ate and how you eat today? If so or if not, why do you think this is true.
- What do you think are the most nutritious foods from your ancient culture? Are these foods available in markets? Do you still eat these foods. If not, would you consider eating them today?
- What is the most valuable piece of information you gained from this assignment?
Your paper should be 2-3 pages typed . You should have at least 2 citations, other than the workbook (library journals, books, Internet) and at least one of these should be either a book or a journal.
