Nyla and Joe have been married for the last 10 years. Joe is a stay-at-home parent with no income for 2019/20. Nyla received the following income in 2019/20: Salary from employment 15,800 (PAYE 750); Redundancy pay (from previous employment) 32,000; Bank interest 275; Dividend income 3,090; Fostering income (for a 10 year-old child fostered for 6 months of the tax year) 16,500; Patent royalties 720; Trading income of 800 (from a small candle-making business she runs from home). In 2019/20, Nyla also made the following capital disposals: Sale of part (15%) of a large residential property development (not Nylas principal private residence) for 1.35 million, incurring disposal costs of 75,000. At the date of sale the market value of the remaining 85% of the development was 13.55 million. The development had originally been bought by Nyla in April 1995 for 2 million plus incidental acquisition costs of 50,000. Sale of a caravan which cost 12,000 in October 2016, for 10,500, incurring disposal costs of 250. Nyla had claimed capital allowances for this caravan, from the date of purchase. Required: (i) Advise Nyla as to her income tax and capital gains tax liabilities for 2019/20. Clearly show all workings. (ii) Critically discuss whether disparities between the taxation of employed and self-employed income in the UK system of income tax should be removed. Note that you do not need to provide details of these disparities.
