ODU is a public, D1 university in Virgina At a time when Twitter has become a center of controversy in sports, ODU's football coach Bobby Wilder has implemented one of the nation's most restrictive policies on the fast-growing social medium. ODU players are banned from Twitter, year-around, for as long as they're on the team. Wilder shut off access to Twitter last season after investigating why a couple of his players weren't doing well academically. He found that they were tweeting up to 100 times per day and that some of the tweets were objectionable. Wilder stated, "More importantly, it was affecting our grades. It was hindering the academic performance of some of our players."
Like millions of teenagers, Calvert Cook was a prolific tweeter when he attended Booker T. Washington High School. He checked his Twitter account dozens of times a day and, in 140 characters or less, would comment about everything from music to sports to who was dating whom. Calvert enrolled at Old Dominion University in 2015, where he is a linebacker on the football team. He is performing well both on and off the field, remains academically eligible and has never had any disciplinary action taken against him. During the season, after a football game, Calvert tweeted "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we didn't come to play SCHOOL classes are POINTLESS."Coach Wilder suspendedCalvert for 2 games for violating team rules. Calvert believes that the Twitter ban violates his rights.
