Often, statistics can be used as a valuable and enlightening tool to support a position. On the other hand, people sometimes use statistics incorrectly, misrepresenting or misinterpreting the data to try to support a claim that is not accurate. In this Discussion, you will analyze and evaluate the use of statistics in a news or research report.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review the required Chapter 12 sections from the course text,
Thinking Mathematically.
Look at several graphs in newspapers, magazines, or websites and evaluate them based on the list on p. 682 of the course text, "Things to watch for in visual displays of data."
Find a recent news or research report that uses statistical information to make a claim. Summarize the report and explain why you do and do not believe its claims.
With these thoughts in mind: Post by Day 3 a 2- to 3-paragraph response that analyzes the accuracy of the statistical claims in your chosen report. Provide at least two resources that support your analysis. Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week's Learning Resources, or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.
