On May 1, 2020, Florence, who lived in Florida, accepted an offer for a job as a professor at Baruch for the 2020-2021 academic year. Meeting that day in the office of Jesse, the Assistant Dean for Hiring, the parties agreed that Florence's employment would begin on August 1, 2020 and would finish on May 31, 2021 and that she would receive a salary of $80,000 for that period. When Florence asked Jesse to confirm the agreement in writing, Jesse refused, saying "No need. I am an honest man. You have my promise." On May 15, 2020, Florence came back to New York to look for an apartment. On that day she met with Nicky, the landlord of a building on Broadway and 20th Street and orally agreed to rent from him a studio apartment for $1,200/month beginning on August 1, 2020 and ending on May 31, 2021. When Florence asked Nicky to confirm the lease in writing, Nicky also refused. Since Florence didn't know how NY taxes worked on July 15 in anticipation of her move to NY she orally agreed to hire Sam, an accountant, to provide her with accounting expertise for the period of August 1 through December 31, 2020 for the sum of $750.
