On September 21, General Packaging Co. received from Dayton Glass Works a box containing 3 mason jars, also inside the box was a note which stated we are asking Pints, $14.50, quarts, $15.50, half gallons, $16.50, per gross. There was no cover letter. On September 23, General wrote to acknowledge receipt of the samples. In its letter General advised Dayton that it had accumulated quite a stock of mason jars and preferred to wait a while "before ordering further", but stated that it might nevertheless be interested if Dayton could come down somewhat on the price. On October 4, Dayton wired General, We are now asking $13.50 for pints, $14.50 for quarts and $15.50 for half gallons, same as your sample. We have been made an offer of $13.40/pints, $14.40/quarts and $15.40/half gallons. On October 15, General wired Dayton; your wire of October 4 is in our receipt. We accept your offer. At the time of the wire, the going price for mason jars was Pints $15.00, quarts $16.00 and half gallons $17.00. Dayton immediately wired back, Re yours of October 15, we have no deal, sold out. General then purchased mason jars on the market for $15.00, $16.00.
