On the 11th of January, Gilbert contacted John and William by email, and informed them that he was selling his house for $25 million dollars. Gilbert informed his friends that they should send the acceptance by post.

On the 14th of January, not hearing from either John or William, Gilbert sold his house to Louise. William's lawyer, Mr. Smart found out about the said sale and told William about the sale. William sent a letter accepting Gilbert's offer with Mr. Smart the very next day on the 15th of January. Gilbert informed him once more that the house was sold.

On the 15th of January, John received the letter from Gilbert and immediately posted his acceptance letter to him. Unfortunately, the letter did not reach Gilbert until the 28th of January.
