a.  Place balance lines and note overhaul, borrow, and waste.

b. (Determine stations (to and from) where borrow is needed and the amount of borrow needed between those stations.

c. Determine stations (to and from) where waste occurs and the amount of waste that occurs between those stations.

d. Determine stations (to and from) where waste overhaul and the amount of overhaul that occurs between those stations.

e. After you have graphed the data, choose a small area in the margins above or below the mass diagram to draw a hypothetical centerline profile of the grade line and the ground line to show where the transitions from cut to fill and fill to cut are occurring (we will disregard cross haul). On the hypothetical grade line - ground line profile, use arrows to show the disposition of cut to fill areas. Also shade in locations and note where waste and borrow occur
