One of the hallmarks of urban areas is density, in which many types of people and activities converge in a small area. Many urban conflicts arise from competing desires about how land and urban space should be used. Drawing on two case studies from this class, answer the following questions: in what ways do current tensions stem from long-standing historical processes? What role have government and private actors played in creating those conflicts? What role should the government play in alleviating those conflicts? To what extent should past harms be considered when crafting policy over how land and urban space is used?
