One of the main components of blood are proteins which have potential economic value, and it is therefore necessary to consider the recovering of the proteins in the blood. Plasma constitutes 55% of total blood volume and it is basically composed of proteins (7%), water (91%) and a variety of salts and other low molecular weight compounds (1%). Plasma proteins can be divided into three principal fractions: albumin (about 42% w/v), globulins (56%) and fibrinogen (1%). The many other minority proteins (fibronectin, lipoproteins, etc.), represent less than 1% of the total protein content of plasma. In order to carry out the separation and purification of blood proteins, it is necessary to separate the plasma, the liquid fraction of the blood, from the cellular fraction.
