One of the statistics I use the most is chi-square.The easy way to explain is start with the type of data.For non-parametric, we are usually dealing with categorical data types for both variables.For example, = Win/Loss and Home/Away are nominal data types - it works perfectly with situations like the one we have here.

So for example, do the Heat have more wins at home than away against the Celtics.

You would set up something like this:
