One of your closest friends is going away on vacation to a remote Pacific Island for two weeks and you ask her if you can borrow her car when she is gone. She said yes, and is very grateful, as she was worried about the car sitting idle for two weeks. On the first day, while driving her car, the "check engine" warning light comes on and you also notice the breaks are squeaking, and the car smells like it is burning oil. Because this is one of your closest friends and you are concerned for her safety and yours, you take her car to your mechanic to check out these issues. Your mechanic tells you that the engine very urgently needs an oil change and a tune-up and the brake pads need to be replaced. The total cost of all of this is $500. You want to call and text your friend to let her know about this but remembered that your friend told you that she will be completely out of touch and off the grid. You tell the mechanic to go ahead with the repairs and pay for them when they are completed.

After your friend returns, you tell her about the repairs and she comments on how well the car is now running, and she expressed sincerest thanks to you. However, you're expecting to be paid for the repairs.

  1. What is your friend's best argument that she is not liable to you for the repairs to her car? Explain fully.

  1. What is your best argument that your friend should compensate you for the repairs? Explain fully.
