One of your employees, has just returned from a residential drug treatment program. It was the employee's second time in treatment. Everyone is walking on eggshells, not knowing what to say, how to help, or if they can trust the employee as a co-worker or as a friend. About two years ago, the employee's work and health were so bad, you went to your EAP coordinator.

Together, you helped the employee make the decision to get treatment. You still remember how hard it was confronting this employee's performance, and dealing with the denial and anger. But, it was worth it because the employee came back to work as a new person. That is why you were very disappointed and surprised when the employee had to be hospitalized again. You aren't sure how to handle this.

1 Introduce the topic of your paper.

2. Develop an action plan on how you would handle the situation using the actions from the list below.

  • Give the employee lots of space and time.
  • Stay on the employee to assure no slips this time.
  • Stay back this time; you did what you could.
  • Be supportive, and friendly, yet firm. Consult EAP.
  • Enlist staff in helping make things easier for the employee.

2. Write a summary explaining why you chose your plan and your various actions from the list.

3 Provide references from the lectures and text readings embedded in your responses (include page numbers in the text and or specific weekly lesson) to support your ideas
