One way of handling large flat sheets of material, without physically contacting the material, is to use aerodynamic levitation. The disc (with air coming out of the hole) is then brought near a flat surface, and the aerodynamics of the flow between the disc and the flat surface cause a net upwards force on the surface, enabling it to be lifted.
