Potential opportunities that you are considering exploring | A grant of $214,349 from the Coastal Adaptation & Protection Grants program 2021-22 helped install nearshore engineered reef modules up to 100m in length about 50m offshore from an eroding area of beach adjacent to the C.Y. O'Connor Reserve at the end of Rollinson Road, as part of a coastal management trial. This reef has potential as a snorkel site. |
An area(s) that you would like the students to focus on, or any research tasks that you would like your student group to undertake as part of their project. | Engineered fringing reef has potential as snorkel site and to move users away from Coogee Maritime Trail spread visitor numbers. But what impact will that have on CY O'Connor? CY O'Connor is a quieter park/beach area when compared to South Beach (to the North) and Coogee Beach (to the South). Although it is still a busy destination and parking is already an issue in Summer. Coogee Coast housing development in the area will result in increased numbers of locals. |

In kind support / discount available to the students (e.g., discount or waiver of admission fees, accommodation and transport) | Can meet students on site for a shorebased site visit. If students have adequate swimming/snorkel skills, we might be able to arrange a snorkel around the reef. Alternatively, I can investigate taking a boat out to look at the reef. Both these options are weather dependent. |
