Organizational Assessment Assig X + File | C:/Users/andre/Pictures/Camera%20Roll/Organizational%20Assessment%20Assignment%20Part%202.pdf Organizational Communication (COMM 306) Organizational Assessment OVERALL PURPOSE To evaluate an organization by highlighting organizational problems and offering recommendations using concepts from our course. This assignment aligns with course learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS This assignment has two parts. Part one is due near the beginning of the semester, and part two is due near the end of the semester. See our course syllabus for these due dates. For part one, you will highlight communication issues within an organization. Essentially, during this first assignment, you will diagnose problems within the organization. For part two, you will offer recommendations to improve the communication issues you highlighted in part one. Thus, you are offering advice that could potentially help the organization. As such, you will use the same organization for both parts. You may choose ANY organization; though, it may be beneficial to select a familiar organization. If you are having a difficult time with choosing an organization to analyze, consider the following questions: . Is there an organization you have worked for or volunteered with in the past? Is there an organization you are currently involved with as an employee, volunteer, or customer? Is there an organization you hope to interact with in the future (e.g., potential employer)? Remember that an organization is not just limited to a business. It could be a church, a non- profit organization, or even a social movement group! If you are questioning your choice, please talk with your instructor. The following pages provide you with important information for both parts of the assessment, including outlines and rubrics that you can use to organize your thoughts. Additional writing tips will be provided by your instructor to help you create an effective organizational assessment. + Organizational Assessment Assig X + File | C:/Users/andre/Pictures/Camera%20Roll/Organizational%20Assessment%20Assignment%20Part%202.pdf Organizational Communication (COMM 306) Part One: Diagnosing Issues Due date: See syllabus 50 points OVERVIEW For part one, you will focus on organizational communication issues. Specifically, you will describe three (3) key issues currently impeding successful organizational communication, supported by evidence from your research. As you detail the issues and evidence, you are expected to include and explain a total of five (5) course concepts. CONSIDER THIS TO HELP YOU BEGIN! To become familiar with the organization's issues, you will need to perform some research. Here are some ideas to help you diagnose organizational communication issues: Talk to members of the organization Go to the organization and observe as an "insider." Review information from and about the organization (e.g., websites, brochures, reviews, social media, news articles). Your research will likely yield many issues with the organization. Consolidate your findings to only three (3) main issues and illuminate those issues with evidence from your research. When diagnosing and providing evidence, using our course concepts will strengthen your argument. GENERAL OUTLINE OF PART ONE Use the following outline to organize your assessment. Remember, in part one you are only diagnosing issues, with examples. You are NOT offering recommendations, as this will be the purpose of part two later in the semester. Section 1: Introduction to the Organization Length: 1 Paragraph Purpose of section: To provide basic information about your organization to your audience. Consider the following when writing this section: How large is the organization? How many members are involved? Where is it located? What is the organization's purpose? When did the organization begin? Section 2: Preview of your Assessment Length: 1 Paragraph Purpose of section: To briefly preview the three (3) main issues you diagnosed and how you reached your conclusions. Consider the following when writing this section: What research methods did you use? How did these methods help you reach your conclusions? Write (1-2) brief sentences that preview your three (3) main issues. Section 3: Main Issue #1 Length: 2-3 Paragraphs Purpose of section: Consider the following when writing this section: + + Organizational Assessment Assig X + File | C:/Users/andre/Pictures/Camera%20Roll/Organizational%20Assessment%20Assignment%20Part%202.pdf Organizational Communication (COMM 306) To highlight the first main issue that you have diagnosed and explain how it is impeding successful organizational communication. . What evidence can you provide from your research that will illuminate the issue for your reader? Section 5: Main Issue #3 Length: 2-3 Paragraphs Purpose of section: To highlight the third main issue that you have diagnosed and explain how it is impeding successful organizational communication. Section 6: Call to Action Length: About 1 paragraph Purpose of section: To briefly summarize your report and set up an appropriate transition into organizational assessment part two. What is so problematic about the issue? Which course concept(s) (choose 1-2) would best help highlight the issues or evidence you present? When using a course concept, be sure to define it in your own words-Imagine that your reader has never learned about the concept before. Plagiarism scores above 30% are problematic. Thus, you may want to submit your paper early to see if adjustments are needed (i.e., paraphrase, rephrase, reword, not use so many quotations). See the following rubric for point deductions for scores that are above 30%. + + Organizational Assessment Assig X + File | C:/Users/andre/Pictures/Camera%20Roll/Organizational%20Assessment%20Assignment%20Part%202.pdf Organizational Communication (COMM 306) Organizational Assessment Part Two Rubric Introduction The organization is briefly reintroduced.
