ou and your co-leader have continued to work with the group of eight college-aged women exploring challenges related to anxiety management at college. While the group has moved into the working stage after some significant storming behavior in weeks three and four, some challenges still remain. You arrive early to set up for the group's weekly session and are met by Janelle. Janelle has attended the weekly sessions regularly and is a quieter member of the group, but she does participate and has contributed significantly to the group throughout the six weeks you have worked together. Janelle is quite distraught and says that she would like to speak with you about something she observed over the weekend. She shares that she was at a local shopping center and saw two group members, Ainsley and Rebecca, having lunch. She was seated near them and overheard them talking about the group and specific group members. Janelle overheard Ainsley say that the group was a waste of time and that most of the group members were too stupid or clueless to get any work done. Janelle shared that Ainsley also made remarks that she felt were racist toward two group members who are Caribbean Americans. Janelle did not confront Ainsley or Rebecca and does not believe that they saw her. Janelle is extremely upset that group members are talking about the group process outside of group, and she feels anxious about continuing to participate.

Answer the following questions:

  • Reflect on any guidelines that may apply to this case, and outline how you would use the ACA Practitioner's Guide to Ethical Decision Making to inform how you would respond to Janelle and the group.
  • Discuss the skills you would use to get the group back on track.
