Outraged by a sudden increase in cheap imported beef, resulting from lower overseas animal welfare and food safety standards Angus, the leader of a peaceful protest group, Organic Farmers for Animal Livelihoods (OFFAL) decided to hold a public procession and assembly. The procession would begin from his farm located a few miles outside the city of Nottingley, to the Town Hall Square in the city centre, where members would assemble for speeches. Angus hand delivered a letter to his local Nottingley Police station twenty-four hours before the procession was to begin and gave them details of the date, the time, and the planned route. Angus also contacted members of OFFAL via WhatsApp to tell them to meet at his farm at 7am the next day. He also told each member of the group to bring a cow as well as a cow bell to make some noise, information that he had not given to the police. Fifty members of OFFAL turned up on the day and began to march with their cows, ringing their cow bells, along the route. By 8am the march reached the main road towards the city centre and most of the remaining members of OFFAL continued to walk to the Town Hall Square, but a splinter group headed by Kerry decided to break away and headed to The Barndale, the main pedestrian shopping centre, blocking the entrance with their cows, refusing to move, and shouting, "Grass Fed Beef is Best". Kerry was arrested for obstruction of the highway by PC Galloway, on duty at the scene. Angus was subsequently arrested by PC Bull "under section 11 of the Public Order Act" for the failure of the procession to follow the route he had specified in his letter. At the assembly in the Town Hall Square, Dexter addressed the members of OFFAL using a loud hailer. However, his speech was interrupted by several individuals from a radical group Veganism for Everyone Group (VEG), who had been tipped off about the assembly, and started to shove and jostle members of OFFAL shouting "Free the cows". PC Carrot told Dexter to stop speaking. Dexter refused and PC Carrot arrested him for breach of the peace. Olive, a member of VEG held up a banner that displayed a picture of a calf being slaughtered under the heading "Meat is murder". PC Sage, on duty at the scene, saw a group of local children approach the Square, and asked Olive to put the banner away. Olive refused and was arrested under section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986.
