Over the last few months we have examined various aspects of American labor law. The law however is only as strong as the solidarity of workers. That is, the law cannot be a substitute for the collective action of workers, at work and in their communities. Moreover, as we have examined in our discussions, the law alone is no guarantee of the rights of workers. As Senator Robert Wagner wrote:"Democracy cannot work unless it is honored in the factory as well as in the polling booth; workers cannot truly be free in body and spirit unless their freedom extends into places where they earn their daily bread."(1935) Drawing on your reading of the NLRA what are the weaknesses of the current labor legislation? Be specific. What needs to be done to assure, as Wagner stated, workers are "truly free in body and spirit."
