Ottawa Public Health estimates that 1 in 7 (13.9%) Ottawa households are food insecure, with 9.5% experiencing moderate to severe food insecurity (Ottawa Public Health, 2022) and it defines food insecurity as when an individual or households are:
- stressed about running out of food before they can purchase more,
- cannot afford balanced meals,
- go hungry by eating less or skipping meals (sometimes not eating for an entire day), or
- do not have access to the variety or quantity of food that they need due to lack of money.
As inflation rises, individuals and families are increasingly unable to purchase as much as they used to, further impacting food insecurity.
Ottawa Public Health recognizes that access to food is a basic human right. (Ottawa Public Health, 2022) Each year, Ottawa Public Health conducts a survey to measure the cost of basic healthy eating and uses this data to assess the state and urgency of food insecurity in the region. The Ottawa Food Bank, originally founded to be a temporary solution, increasingly feels pressure to do more to solve food insecurity as the governments do less. (Ottawa Food Bank, 2022) It publishes an annual Ottawa Hunger Report which can be found here.
You are invited to study the current food insecurity situation in Ottawa and submit a project management plan that articulates a solution to an aspect (of your choice) regarding this critical social dilemma. Imagine that you are part of a consulting organization that has been contracted to develop and present a recommended solution to Ottawa Public Health. Be creative, original and comprehensive in the development of your proposed solution.
