Part 1

After viewing the lecture by Professor Godwin-Gill and reading the chapter in the e-book, please conduct research within the APUS library and through high quality academic resources available online to support your analysis of the following:

• Please describe what, in scholarly opinion, is the biggest legal challenge when it comes to this crisis as it occurs on the seas? Focus on the problems with the existing legal positions on the issue at both the international level and the U.S. domestic laws and policies levels.
  • Why do you think that your selected topic is the most significant problem relating to sea-based migration?
  • Has your identified problem remained constant over time, or has it changed? Either way, how has the change (or lack thereof) affected the problem?
  • Have the legal tools, technologies or methods used for addressing your chosen problem remained constant or have they changed over time? Either way, what effect(s) has that change (or lack thereof) had?
• With respect to your identified problem, what are some of the maritime best practices that have evolved?
  • Why are they suitable solutions? Do you envision them continuing to evolve in the future, or are they mature concepts that are working wellin the field and likely to remain stable? Based upon what?
  • What other solutions can you think of to help address your selected problem regarding migration and the Law of the Sea?

• How did the acts of researching and analyzing the influences of both legal and non-legal fields help you to better understand this week's topic?
  • Was there any specific part of this background kind of work that was particularly enlightening, or difficult, for you? What was it, and why?
    • What did you learn about persisting through to expand knowledge within that particular research or analysis task?
    • Now that you have done it, do you think that this particular research or analysis task is best done alone or as a collaborative effort? Why? If you were tasked to do something similar for a real world event occurring in real time, how would you like to approach it?
  • Do you think that this kind of exercise helps or hinders you for the possibility of making future decisions under similar circumstances?
